What the PDF to Markdown converter produces
This tool turns the text of a PDF into Markdown, the lightweight format used by GitHub, many note-taking apps, static site generators and documentation wikis. Headings are marked with #, ## and ### based on font size, paragraphs are kept as blocks, and bulleted and numbered lists become Markdown lists.
Links in the PDF come through as Markdown links, so references in a paper or a manual stay clickable. The result is a single .md file you can read in any text editor.
Why people convert PDF to Markdown
Writers and developers move old manuals, specs and reports into a docs site or a repository. Markdown is easy to review line by line, easy to version, and easy to restyle later without fighting a fixed layout.
Students and researchers use it to bring readings into apps like Obsidian or other Markdown notes tools, where they can highlight, link ideas and search across everything. It is also a practical way to get the plain text of a document to paste into another tool, without the stray line breaks you get when copying from a PDF viewer.
What is left out
Markdown is text first. Images, colors, page layout and exact fonts are not part of the output. Tables are not listed among the things this tool rebuilds, so complex tables may come through as plain lines of text; for spreadsheets of data, PDF to Excel is the better fit.
Heading levels are guessed from font size. If a document uses the same size for titles and body text, or uses many sizes, you may need to adjust a few # marks by hand. Multi-column layouts can also mix the reading order in places.
Scans, privacy and password-protected files
A scanned PDF has no text, only pictures of pages. Run it through OCR PDF first (English, Spanish or Portuguese) and then convert the result to Markdown.
The conversion runs in your browser and the file never leaves your device, so internal documents stay with you. If the PDF asks for a password, open it first with Unlock PDF using the password you already have.
Tidying the Markdown after converting
Open the .md file in an editor with a preview pane so you can see the headings and lists as they will render. Fix any heading levels that look off, join paragraphs that were split by a page break, and remove repeated page headers or footers that came through as text.
If you only need one chapter, use Extract pages or Split PDF first. Converting a smaller file gives you a shorter Markdown document that is quicker to review.
