How to compress a PDF to 2 MB in 3 steps

  1. 1

Select your PDF. The target is already set to 2 MB, and you can type another size if needed.

  2. 2

Press “Process”. ConvertirDocs reduces photo quality in small steps and stops as soon as the file is under 2 MB.

  3. 3

Compare the before and after sizes, open the result to check it, and download.

Your files never leave your device

This tool runs entirely inside your browser. The file is never uploaded to any server: it is read, processed and downloaded on your own device. When you close or reload the page, it is gone from memory.

Applications with a 2 MB cap

Two megabytes is a common ceiling on job boards, applicant tracking systems and university application portals. It's the size they allow for a résumé, a cover letter, a transcript, a recommendation letter or a writing sample. Most of those files are well below it, until you add a scanned diploma, a design portfolio or a transcript exported at print resolution.

Unlike very small targets, 2 MB leaves room for quality. A recruiter or an admissions officer may zoom into your grades or study your portfolio pieces, so you want to remove only the excess weight. With the target mode, ConvertirDocs stops lowering quality the moment the file fits, instead of crushing everything to the minimum.

Portfolios and design-heavy CVs

A CV built in a design app, with a photo, icons and colored blocks, can export much larger than you'd expect, often because the images inside were saved at full resolution. Compressing to 2 MB targets exactly those images. Text and vector shapes, like lines, icons drawn as shapes and charts, are left untouched, so your headings stay crisp and recruiters can still select and search your text.

For a portfolio, check the result at full size. If your best images look soft, try a slightly higher target where the portal allows it, or split the portfolio into a short selection for the application and a full version for the interview.

Scanned transcripts and certificates

Diplomas, transcripts and certificates are often scanned in color at high resolution, which makes each page heavy. These are exactly the PDFs that shrink best, because nearly all of their weight is photos. A few pages usually fit under 2 MB while seals, signatures and small print remain legible.

If you need to combine several scans into one upload, put them together first with “Merge PDF”, then compress the merged file. Compressing at the end gives the engine the whole 2 MB budget to share between pages.

Private, free and honest about results

Application documents contain personal data: your address, your ID number, your grades. With ConvertirDocs the PDF is processed in your browser and isn't uploaded, and nothing is stored. There's no account, no email, no usage limit, and no watermark added to your file.

If 2 MB can't be reached, for example with a very long document full of embedded fonts or image types the engine doesn't recompress, you get the smallest version achieved and a clear explanation of why.

Frequently asked questions

Will recruiters notice the compression?

Text and vector graphics aren't recompressed, so a typical CV looks the same. Only photos are adjusted, and only until the file fits under 2 MB.

Is 2 MB the same as 2,000 KB?

Not exactly. ConvertirDocs treats 2 MB as 2,048 KB. If a portal says “2,000 KB”, type 2000 as the target to be safe.

Will my CV text still be searchable?

Yes. Text is never converted to images, so applicant tracking systems can still read it.

My PDF is a scan with no selectable text. Can I fix that?

Yes. After compressing, run “OCR PDF”. It adds an invisible text layer so the scan becomes searchable without changing how it looks.

Can I compress several application documents at once?

Yes. Select them all. Each file gets its own 2 MB target, and you download them in a ZIP or one by one.

Is my document uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser, and the file stays on your device.

What if the PDF is password-protected?

Remove the password first with “Unlock PDF”, then compress the unlocked copy.
