A Smallpdf Alternative With No Download Limits or Uploads
Smallpdf and ConvertirDocs compared on file uploads, retention, free-plan limits, sign-up and price, from Smallpdf's official pages, checked in September 2026.

Smallpdf is a polished, popular PDF platform built in Switzerland, with a large set of tools, AI features, mobile and desktop apps, and an e-signature service. It's easy to see why so many people use it. The reasons people look for an alternative tend to be practical: the free plan limits downloads, the Pro plan is a subscription, and every file you process goes to a server.
This guide sets out the differences plainly. All facts about Smallpdf come from its official pages, according to its official pages, checked in September 2026. Prices and policies change, so it's worth checking those pages yourself before deciding.
How files are handled
Smallpdf processes files on servers. According to its privacy notice, checked in September 2026, files uploaded by users are processed by a hosting provider, Hetzner, on servers located in the European Union, and that processing "does not involve permanent storage". All communication and file transfers to and from its server are encrypted with TLS. Its pricing page adds that Smallpdf is ISO/IEC 27001 certified and compliant with the GDPR, CCPA and nFADP.
How long a file stays depends on whether you're logged in. The privacy notice says:
- With an account: files are deleted within one hour unless you save them to your file storage. Saved files you choose to delete are generally deleted within 14 days.
- Without an account: Smallpdf "will generally aim to delete User Files within a reasonable period of time after the last time they were opened", and that period is extended each time you reopen the file. The notice doesn't give an exact number of hours for this case.
ConvertirDocs processes all files in your browser. When you use Compress PDF, Merge PDF, Edit PDF, OCR PDF or Sign PDF, the work happens on your own device. The file never leaves it, so there's no retention period to think about.
Today every ConvertirDocs tool runs in your browser: no file ever leaves your device.
Free plan and price
Smallpdf's free plan is useful but capped. Its pricing page, checked in September 2026, lists the Free plan at $0 with "30+ document management tools", "Limited document downloads" and limited mobile app access. Many tools show a "Daily download limit" on the free plan, and some features are Pro only, such as Strong Compression and editing existing text. AI tools like Chat with PDF, AI PDF Summarizer and Translate PDF are marked as "Limited" for free users.
Smallpdf Pro costs US$15 per month billed monthly, or US$10 per month billed annually (US$120 per year), according to the same page. It includes unlimited access to all tools and downloads, Strong Compression, OCR, unlimited AI tools, unlimited mobile app access and a Sign.com Premium subscription. A 7-day free trial is available. Teams of 2 to 19 people pay per seat, and a Business plan for 20 or more is quoted on request.
ConvertirDocs is 100% free with no download limits. There's no Pro plan, no trial and no daily cap. The only limits are technical: browser tools depend on your device's memory (with a warning, not a block, above 150 MB on a phone or 500 MB on a computer). The site will be supported by ads, which aren't active yet.
Do you need an account?
Neither service forces you to create one for basic use. Smallpdf's privacy notice explicitly describes how it handles files for people who use its services without a user account or without logging in, and its pricing page marks some features, like Share, as "Free with an account". Logging in changes how long files are kept, as described above.
ConvertirDocs has no accounts at all. There's no login, no email and nothing to confirm.
What Smallpdf does well
Smallpdf has real strengths, and they're worth naming:
- A broad toolset with server power. It lists conversions from many formats (including Pages, EPUB and HWP), Strong Compression and editing of existing PDF text on Pro, which ConvertirDocs doesn't do.
- AI tools. Chat with PDF, a summarizer, translation and a question generator. ConvertirDocs has none.
- E-signatures with others. Through Sign.com you can request signatures, with features like an activity timeline and a certificate of completion. ConvertirDocs only lets you add your own visual signature.
- Apps and storage. Mobile apps, a mobile scanner, cloud storage for your files, and a Windows desktop app that its official page says offers PDF tools offline.
- Team features. Centralized billing and member management.
If your work depends on these, Smallpdf is a strong option.
How ConvertirDocs is different
- Private by default. Your files are never uploaded. That's useful for passports, bank statements, contracts and school or medical records.
- No download limits. Compress, merge or convert as many files as you want, every day.
- No account, no subscription. Nothing to sign up for and nothing to cancel.
- A Word editor and a spreadsheet. The Word editor opens and saves .docx files with formatting, lists, tables and images, and can print to PDF. The spreadsheet opens .xlsx and .csv files, supports common formulas and saves back to .xlsx or .csv. Both work without a cloud, so the file stays in your tab until you download it.
ConvertirDocs isn't the right tool for everything. It can't change text that's already in a PDF (you add text, images and shapes on top), PDF to Word may need adjustments on complex layouts, OCR supports English, Spanish and Portuguese, and it doesn't convert Word, PowerPoint or Excel to PDF yet (for that, a server-based service like Smallpdf is the better choice today).
Which should you pick?
Pick Smallpdf if you want AI features, to edit existing PDF text, signature requests with an audit trail, cloud storage and team management, and you're comfortable with a subscription and server processing.
Pick ConvertirDocs if you need everyday PDF work (compressing, merging, splitting, converting, signing, filling forms, OCR) without uploading your files, without an account and without daily download caps.
