Blank music paper on demand
Staff paper, also called manuscript paper, is the page musicians write on: rows of five-line staves where notes, rests, clefs and chords go. A pad from a music store runs out at the worst moment, often right before a lesson or a rehearsal. Printing your own means you always have some, and you can print exactly as many pages as you need.
Each sheet has staves spread over the whole page, with enough space between them for clefs, dynamics, lyrics or fingering.
For students, teachers and composers
Music students use it for theory homework, interval and scale exercises, ear training and dictation, where the teacher plays a melody and the student writes it down. Teachers print class sets for exercises and tests, with a line for the student's name and the date. Composers and songwriters sketch melodies and arrangements by hand before moving them to notation software, and many find ideas come faster on paper.
Choir directors and band leaders use it to write out a part, a quick harmony or a change for a rehearsal. Self-taught players transcribe a solo or a riff they are learning by ear.
For lessons, a few printed pages kept in a folder with the student's other materials make it easy to write exercises on the spot. For composing, many musicians like to sketch the melody on one staff and the chords above it, and only later write the full arrangement. Pencil is the usual choice on staff paper, because notes and rhythms change a lot while you work.
Paper, color and printing
Choose Letter for the United States and Canada, A4 for most other countries, or Legal for longer pages. Gray staves are discreet and let the notes stand out; black staves are clearer when photocopied or read from a music stand in dim light; blue gives a softer look.
Print at 100% scale, or "actual size", so the staves come out evenly spaced and nothing is cut at the edges. Heavier paper holds up better on a music stand and takes pencil erasing better, which helps when you are composing and changing notes.
