When PNG is the right format
PNG is the format of choice for anything with sharp edges, text or transparency: logos, icons, screenshots, diagrams, signatures, stickers and product cut-outs. It's lossless, so saving and editing it again doesn't degrade the image. And it's understood by practically every design tool, office suite, website builder and operating system.
That makes “image to PNG” a common need. A designer sends a logo as WEBP or AVIF and your presentation software won't take it. A website icon is an .ico file and you want to edit it. A drawing is an SVG and the app you use only imports bitmaps. A layered PSD or an Illustrator file has to be shared with someone who doesn't have Adobe software.
Formats this page opens
JPG, JPEG and JFIF, WEBP, GIF (first frame), BMP, AVIF, ICO, SVG (drawn at 2000 pixels on the longest side), TIFF (one PNG per page), Photoshop PSD, Illustrator .ai, JPEG XL, HEIC and camera RAW. Transparency in WEBP, AVIF, SVG, ICO and PSD files is preserved.
A few formats come with conditions. PSD files need the combined image Photoshop saves when “Maximize Compatibility” is on. Illustrator files need “Create PDF Compatible File”, the default, and give one image per artboard. RAW files use the JPEG preview stored by the camera, not a developed RAW. HEIC works in Safari, and in Chrome on devices with an HEVC decoder. If a file can't be opened, you'll be told.
PNG and file size
PNG keeps everything, so it's heavier than JPG or WEBP for photographs. A logo or a screenshot stays fairly small, but a photo from a phone can become very large. Converting a JPG photo to PNG won't improve its quality either: it only stops further loss. For photos without transparency, Image to JPG or Image to WEBP usually make more sense.
If a PNG is too heavy for a form, “Compress image” can reduce it to a palette of up to 256 colors, which works well for screenshots and graphics.
Done on your device, for free
Your images are converted in the browser and never uploaded. There's no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of files, and several results download together in a ZIP. EXIF data such as a GPS location isn't copied to the PNG. ConvertirDocs is 100% free.
