NEF: Nikon's RAW format
NEF is the RAW format Nikon cameras use, from older DSLRs to the Z series mirrorless bodies. Photographers choose it because it keeps the sensor data, which gives them room to fix exposure and color during editing. But a NEF file isn't a finished picture, and many places simply won't open it: phone galleries, websites, online print services, email previews and most upload forms.
If you shot a trip, a wedding or a product session in NEF only, you'll eventually need JPG copies to share with people who don't have photo software.
How the conversion works
Nikon cameras embed a JPEG preview inside every NEF. It's the image displayed on the back screen when you review your photos, already processed with your Picture Control settings. ConvertirDocs reads that preview and saves it as a JPG, so the colors look like they did on the camera.
The RAW data is not developed here. You won't be able to pull detail out of the shadows or change white balance after the fact; that's the job of a RAW editor such as Nikon's NX Studio or any other program you like. The resolution of the result depends on your camera: many store a full-size preview, while some store a smaller one.
When a quick NEF to JPG is enough
Sharing photos with friends after an event, uploading a few pictures to social media from a computer without editing software, sending a client a contact sheet to choose from, or checking a card on a borrowed laptop. In all of these, what matters is getting a viewable JPG fast, not a perfect edit.
If you later decide to edit a photo carefully or print it large, go back to the original NEF. It isn't changed by the conversion.
Private, fast and free
NEF files are heavy, and uploading dozens of them to an online converter can take a long time on a normal connection. ConvertirDocs avoids that because the files are processed in your browser and never uploaded. Your photos stay on your device.
There's no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. Select as many NEF files as you need and download all the JPG copies in a single ZIP.
After converting
Photos too heavy for an email or a portal? Send the JPG files to “Compress image” and type a target size in KB. Need exact dimensions for a website or a printing service? “Resize image” sets the width and height in pixels, and “Crop image” trims the frame to a fixed ratio such as 1:1 or 9:16 for social media. You can chain these steps from the result without selecting the files again.
If you shoot RAW+JPEG, your camera already saves a JPG next to each NEF. This page is for the times you only kept the NEF files, or when you deleted the JPG copies to free up space on the card.
