Your files never leave your device

This tool runs entirely inside your browser. The file is never uploaded to any server: it is read, processed and downloaded on your own device. When you close or reload the page, it is gone from memory.

What JPEG XL is and why it's hard to open

JPEG XL, with the extension .jxl, is a newer image format designed to give good quality in small files. Some photo editors, image tools and websites have started to use it, Apple devices support it, and some photographers export JXL to save space on their drives or in their archives.

The problem is support everywhere else. Many programs, older operating systems, online forms, social networks and photo printing services still don't know the format. Windows may show the file without a preview, an upload page may reject it, and a friend on another device may not be able to open it. JPG solves that, because it's accepted practically everywhere.

Works in every modern browser

Safari 17 and later can open JPEG XL by itself, so on a recent iPhone, iPad or Mac the conversion uses the browser's own decoder. In browsers that don't support JPEG XL, like Chrome, Edge or Firefox, ConvertirDocs downloads a decoder only when you actually open a .jxl file, so the page stays light for everyone else.

That decoder runs on your device too. Either way, the image is decoded and converted to JPG in your browser, without being sent anywhere.

Choosing the quality

JPEG XL files are efficient, so the JPG you get may be larger than the original. That's normal. For photos, a high or medium quality usually looks the same on screen. Keep the quality high if you plan to print the picture or if it contains small text.

If the JPG has to fit a size limit, for example on a job portal or an application form, send it to “Compress image” and type the target size in KB. To change its dimensions, use “Resize image”. You don't need to select the file again.

Private, free and without limits

Your images are never uploaded or stored on a server. There's no account, no watermark and no limit on how many pictures you convert. The JPG files carry no EXIF data, so details like the GPS location aren't copied into them, and the camera orientation is respected.

Converting a whole folder? Select all the .jxl files at once and download the results in a single ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

What is a .jxl file?

It's a JPEG XL image, a newer format that keeps good quality in small files but isn't supported by many programs and websites yet.

Does it work in Chrome?

Yes. Chrome doesn't open JPEG XL by itself, so ConvertirDocs downloads a decoder only when you open a .jxl file, and decodes it on your device.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes. Safari 17 and later opens JPEG XL natively, so the conversion works directly.

Why is my JPG larger than the JXL?

JPEG XL is more efficient than JPG. A bigger JPG at the same quality is expected.

Will the JPG look as good as the original?

At high quality it should look the same on screen. JPG uses lossy compression, so for printing or archiving keep the quality high, or convert to PNG with “Convert image” if you want no further loss at all.

Can I convert JXL to PNG instead?

Yes. Use “Convert image” and choose PNG or WEBP as the output.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Select them all and download the JPG images in a ZIP.

Are my images uploaded?

No. They're converted in your browser and never leave your device.
